Being a beachcomber, I am a fan of Hilderbrand’s novels because she writes about characters who live on or around her own home of Nantucket. Descriptions of locations are always pleasant..sun, sand & surf. The Island centers around a family of women: Divorced Mom Birdie, grown daughters Chess & Tate and Aunt India. After Chess’s broken engagement and subsequent death of her ex-fiancĂ©, Birdie decides to take her away on a month long trip to their summer vacation home on Naugatuck Island. The family has not been back for 13 years. Her other daughter Tate decides to get away from her monotonous single life and joins them. Birdie’s sister, India, whose husband was a famous sculptor, is still haunted by his suicide a couple of years earlier, so she decides to go for a short visit, too. So there is the dynamic for this soul searching book..each chapter written in the first person by each character. Each character works through her own problems, sometimes alone and sometimes with help from one another. In the end, they leave the island, all having made some life changing decisions.
I enjoyed the inter- action of all the characters, the addition of ex-husbands, new lovers, and old boyfriends kept me wondering until the end who would end up doing what.
Audio books are not my favorite way to “read” a novel. In my own head as I read, I can hear the characters voice speaking to me the way I think they should be. I was disappointed in the narrator’s voice on this audio. It was not animated enough and at times I could not tell which character was speaking.
All in all, I think this was a great summer “read”.
I am already looking forward to my turn to give this one a shot. Now that the cooler weather has arrived, I am anxious to be swept away to the coast! Pick up your copy on Amazon today...
