What Kids Would Tell You If Only You Would Ask & Your Child's Inner Brilliance Review & Giveaway...

I love a good parenting book.  I love being a mother but it is certainly more challenging than I had imagined.  Raising people is hard!  I have come across a new set of books to help you navigate the wonder that is parenthood by getting to know your child better.  Read on...

What Kids Would Tell You...If Only You'd Ask!  101 conversations you DON'T have to have with your kids.  They are about nothing and everything.  In fact, you could spend you whole life never having any of these conversations with your kids---and you'd never miss them...EXCEPT you will!  What parents miss are the opportunities to get to really know their kids...one conversation at a time---by finding out about what they think, how they feel...about their opinions, ideas, dreams, and so on.  It's amazing what they'll tell you… if only you'd ask!

Your Child's Inner Brilliance...Parent Guide to Discovery.  This book is meant for parents who have a child between ages 5-12, helping them explore their child from various aspects to help him/her unfold in their own unique way.  Every child has inner brilliance waiting to be brought forth into the world.  This book helps parents take an inventory of their child's traits, interests, strengths, limitations, and many other characteristics that make their particular child unique.  Then, it takes them one step further---looking at the various ways that they can/are/aren't playing a part in allowing their child to become the person s/he is meant to be.

These amazing guides are the work of  world recognized child psychologist Dr. Vicki  Panaccione who has been called the "Oprah Winfrey of parenting".  Dr. Vicki has created these amazing guides to help us better understand our children and to open the lines of communication.  These are not your average "do this and then do that" parenting books....not even close.  These books are tools for you to use to help you and  your child have a better understanding of  one another and to learn more about the people they are and the people they hope to be.

A&W are a little  young for me to fully use these books but when they get a little older they I will be starting right in and then keeping them as a memento!  For now I am using the questions to get the boys talking and they have sparked some great 4 year old conversations!  I know they each want a "bunch" of children and they want me to watch them all!  I know their least favorite part of the day is bedtime and that A wants to own a candle store and W wants to be in construction!

These books really are a gateway to some important and loving conversations with your child.  They would make a wonderful gift for you AND your child. Visit Dr. Vicki's website here to purchase these special guides.

Merry Sparkling Christmas by Elizabeth Spurr Review & Giveaway....

We have entered holiday countdown time here at our house.  A&W and even Baby R are right into all things merry and our reading lists have begun to include lots of Christmas titles.  One new one we added this year is Merry Sparkling Christmas by Elizabeth Spurr and illustrated by Colleen Madden.

This sweet board book will definitely be a hit with your little ones.  It was a hit with me right away because it is a board book (paper pages do not stand a chance with Baby R these days!).   Each of the 14 pages depicts a young boy marveling at all the sparkly, shining things which make up the holiday season.  From icicles to tinsel to brand new toys and glittery cookies each page is a celebration of all things kids (and adults too!) love about Christmas.  The book is has a nice rhyming flow and is fun to read.  The illustrations are adorable and I love the boys impish face.  The pages are, of course, filled with lots of sparkles which were a big hit with the kiddos.

Merry Sparkling Christmas would make a fun addition to your holiday library and at only $5.95 on Amazon right now how can you not buy this sparkly little treasure??

Sterling Publishing is giving one RBM reader a copy of Merry Sparkling Christmas!  Thanks so much Sterling!  Here is how to enter...

Mandatory Entry:  Visit the author's website and tell me something you learned about this very talented writer.  You must complete this entry for all others to count.  *Something I learned about wanted to share is:
Buy any of Elizabeth Spurr's books, either on line or at your favorite bookstore. Then write to Elizabeth giving the name of the book, the child's name and, if desired, the occasion (ie. birthday) or a short greeting. Send a self-addressed stamped envelope, and Elizabeth will put her personally autographed greeting in the mail promptly.  How great is this??  Clearly an author who loves her readers and that is something I love!

A Christmas Carol Pop-Up Book Review...

I have my hands on the most beautiful pop up book you can imagine....Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol by artist Chuck Fisher.  It is honestly breathtaking and a lovely decoration and keepsake for the holidays.

This beautiful re-imagining of Charles Dickens's timeless fable, A Christmas Carol: A Pop-Up Book features artist Chuck Fischer's richly painted depictions of the tale of Ebenezer Scrooge and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, brought to life in intricate pop-up scenes by paper engineer Bruce Foster. The entire text of A Christmas Carol is reproduced in five removable, illustrated, keepsake booklets. An introductory booklet provides a biography of Dickens and an illustrated feature on the enduring appeal of this beloved story. The perfect gift, A Christmas Carol, now in pop-up form, will brighten the holidays for young and old.

The pages of this book literally spring to life and are sure to delight anyone who reads it.  The pop up pages will be enough for you to tell the tale to your child in an abbreviated version and I loved reading the entire story from the include booklets.  This book is perfectly perched on our bookshelf to display for the holidays.  Pick up your copy today to have in time for this holiday season.  You can find it on Amazon and it is on sale right now for just $19.80 down from $30!!).  Enjoy!

Mickey Mote Review...

On November 16th a brand new toy hit the market and I was thrilled to be able to test it out with A&W....The Mickey Mote!  The Mickey Mote is a whole new way for your child to watch their favorite shows.  This cool, new gadget allows your child to have an enhanced and interactive viewing experience...how fun!  Here are the details...

How It Works:

The Mickey Mote works with any Disney Preschool DVD that includes Discovery Mode(tm), the interactive "Watch & Play" feature on the DVD!  All parents have to do is program the remote control - there's an easy and quick set-up guide in each DVD- and select the Discovery Mode feature on the menu screen.  Within minutes, kids will be easily responding to questions, throughout the story, about scenes they just watched (such as "What color is Goofy's hat?") by pressing one of four color-coded buttons on the device -- a yellow star, green circle, orange triangle or blue square - to click in their responses.  Discovery Mode features include two levels of play, which provides more challenging questions as the child grows.

Why Parents Will Love It:
Once families have purchased a Disney Preschool DVD that comes packaged with the Mickey Mote, they can continue to build their Disney Preschool libraries as the Mickey Mote works in compatibility with any Discovery Mode enhanced DVD. For example, kids can immediately use the remote with any of the following titles:

*   Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Road Rally
*   Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Mickey's Adventures in Wonderland
*   Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Mickey's Choo Choo
*   Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Minnie's Bow-Tique
*   Handy Manny: Manny's Motorcycle Adventure
*   Handy Manny: Manny's Big Race
*   Little Einsteins: Fire Truck Blast Off
*   My Friends Tigger & Pooh: Super Duper Super Sleuths
*   My Friends Tigger & Pooh: Bedtime With Pooh
Our Experience:   I had a little trouble programming the Mickey Mote but I am SERIOUSLY technologically challenged so this was not a shocker to me.  After a few tries we were ready to go although A&W were a bit annoyed at their slow mother.  When I whipped out the super cool looking remote they wanted to get started immediately not wait for Mama to stumble through syncing a remote control.  In any case once we got started they were super excited about being able to interact with the shows.  The remote control is the PERFECT size for little hands and was very simple for the boys to figure out.  They liked answering the questions about the show and I think it kept them interested for longer.  They both said they wished they did not have to wait so long for the questions so I think they would have liked it to be even more interactive.  I really liked how the boys were not just sitting there like little drones and were answering educational questions pertaining to the video.

You can purchase the Mickey Mote as well as the DVD's on Amazon (this would make a great gift for the 2-5 year old on your list!).

Disclosure:  I was provided with the above mentioned product for purpose of review.  I was not compensated in any way and the opinions expressed are my own and have not been edited.

Zoobooks Review & Giveaway...

Do your children love to get mail?  I know mine do.  When the mail comes in they rush to the door to see if they have something and I often find myself trying to pass off a clothing catalog as "just for them" (this rarely works).  When I heard about a line of magazines called Zoobooks I knew I just had to check these out so A&W could get their own magazine in the mail (hand over the  Land's End catalog thank you very much!).

In case you are not familiar with Zoobooks here is a little background from their website...

Zoobooks is the everything-you-wanted-to-know-but-didn't-know-where-to-look children's resource for animals. Each issue delves into topics such as anatomy, habitat, socialization, and reproduction-all on a single animal or animal group-in a vibrant, easy-to-understand way. The series is produced by Wildlife Education, Ltd., a company first established in 1980. Hardcover library editions of the series were first produced in 1983. Zootles magazines and books, for younger readers 2 to 6 years old, were launched in 2005. Then, the animal learning fun was extended to the littlest learners, ages 0 to 2 years old, with the introduction of Zoobies magazines and books in 2008.
Our subscribers number in the hundreds of thousands and enjoy more than just a magazine - they receive the password to our Secret Jungle website with just-for-kids animal games, puzzles and articles PLUS twice monthly e-Safaris that trek through the best animal sites on the web. Welcome to the world of Zoobooks, Zootles and Zoobies!

The kids were sent a copy of each Zoobooks, Zootles and Zoobies to take a look at and let's just say these are very well loved!  They were as excited about getting mail as I knew they would be plus the magazines are filled with things kids love...animals!  The pictures are amazing and the content for each perfectly age appropriate.

In Zoobies (for the littlest ones) the magazine is smaller and square and heavy duty (no easy to tear pages here).  Each page is filled with bright and close up pictures of the featured animal and is more of a story book than a magazine.  The book also  features activities for you to do with your child.

In Zootles, for ages 2-6, there are more amazing pictures as in Zoobies but the content is just perfect for  pre-schoolers and early readers.  There are stories, games, hidden pictures and so much more.  A&W LOVED their Zootles magazine which was all about Ants (perfect for my little bug lovers!).

Zoobooks is for ages 6-12 and again, I can't say enough about the photography....simply beautiful and vibrant.  The magazine we received featured the hummingbird and while the content was a little old for A&W they were mesmerized by the photos.  Zoobooks contains puzzles and numbers games, facts about the animal featured going into detail on things such as skeleton structure etc...

Something I really love about all the Zoobooks?  No advertising.  I love this.  There is no other "stuff" cluttering up the magazine so your child can enjoy the content without other distraction.  Bravo!

You can order a subscription to any or all of these wonderful magazines by visiting the Zoobooks Website.

One Reviewed By Mom reader will receive a one year subscription to the magazine of their choice (Zoobookis, Zoobies or Zootles!).  Thank you Zoobooks!  Here is how to enter...

Fortun's Finishing Touch Sauces Review & Giveaway...

The holidays are looming all which means shopping, parties and less time for all the other things we do like cooking and cleaning.  I have no advice on the cleaning front but I can help you out with the cooking part thanks to Fortun's Finishing Touch Sauces!  Fortun's Finishing Touch Sauces allow you to throw together a delicious meal in no time at all simply by opening the tub containing their sauces....hooray for Fortun's!

Fortun’s Finishing Touch Sauces make creating savory gourmet meals a breeze, allowing parents more time to spend with their family instead of in the kitchen.  Simply cook the meat, pasta, poultry or fish, then heat the sauce and pour it on top to finish the dish.  The complete product line consists of twelve varieties incorporating flavors from around the world and the sauces are carefully simmered in small handcrafted batches with wholesome and natural ingredients.

All varieties of Fortun’s Finishing Touch Sauces are fresh-refrigerated products with a shelf life of 150 days and are available at select retailers throughout the country.  The sauces come in 8 ounce tubs and retail for $4.95 to $5.95.

Hello happy Mom!   On a recent busy evening I found myself with some uncooked pork chops, crazy children, little time and Fortun's Finishing Touch Sauce in Santa Fe Verde.  I literally tossed the pork chops in the oven to bake with no prep or seasoning (well, I at least took it out of the plastic packaging!).  When the pork chops were cooked I heated the sauce for a minute on the stove top and then put it over the chops.  The kids and my husband raved about a meal that I barely lifted a finger over.  I love your Fortun's.  No, really, I LOVE  you!

Fortun's Finishing Touch Sauces come in a great variety of flavors and the two I tried (Santa Fe Verde and Mulligatawny Curry) were delicious and flavorful and made me look like a better cook than I really am.  Pick some up at your local grocer today and save yourself some time all while looking like a rock star in the kitchen!  Click here to find a store near you.

The Search For Santa Paws Review & Giveaway...

There is a new Disney movie out TODAY that you absolutely must see....The Search For Santa Paws!

DISNEY’S THE SEARCH FOR SANTA PAWS is an exciting and uplifting movie from director Robert Vince about the power of giving and the true meaning of Christmas in the tradition of Disney’s classic holiday tales. This big city adventure for the whole family reveals the how the legendary friendship of Santa Claus and Santa Paws began.

The film follows in the tradition of Disney’s classic holiday tales with a heartwarming story about the power of giving and the true meaning of Christmas. An exciting prequel, the movie allows kids of all ages to discover how the legendary friendship of Santa Claus and Santa Paws began – as it is the inspiring original film (in a timeline it precedes 2009’s Santa Buddies: The Legend of Santa Paws).

In the movie, when Santa and his new best friend, Paws, discover that the boys and girls of the world have lost the spirit of the season, they take a trip to New York City. But after Santa loses his memory, it’s up to Paws, a faithful orphan named Quinn (America’s Got Talent’s Kaitlyn Maher), her new friend Will (The Game Plan’s Madison Pettis) and a wonderful group of magical talking dogs to save St. Nick and show the world what Christmas is really all about. Do you believe in Santa Paws? Experiencing this sure-to-be holiday classic, full of fun, adventure and a carrying the timeless messages of the holidays, with surely delight the entire family!

A&W are so excited about Christmas so when I received Santa Paws in the mail they were practically trembling with excitement to watch this one.  Who can resist the cover??  A snowy scene.  Adorable puppies.  SANTA!!  A&W were sold immediately.  We hunkered down that very afternoon to watch and I will say that my four year olds sat transfixed for the entire movie.  I think A&W particularly liked the scenes with  Paws....between him talking and the adorableness they could not get enough.    I will say that one of my sons tends to get a bit emotional in movies (we call it having empathy!!) and he told me a few times he was "getting a little empathy".  There are just a few spots where more sensitive children might get a bit emotional (for us it was when Quinn the orphan sang "Who Will Sing To Me", scenes with the "mean lady" at the orphanage and (without giving too much of the plot away!) some scenes near the end where it was unclear (at least to "W") if there would be a happy ending.

Despite the "empathy" parts, the movie delighted A&W and mom too.  The special effects were, as you come to expect from Disney, magical.  I felt that Santa was very convincing and that the dogs actually looked as if they were speaking...nicely done!!  On top of being big fans of the movie A&W were really into the bonus features as well which include a music video (by Disney Star Debby Ryan which is super fun), an adorable pop-up story and more.  A&W are particularly into the pop-up story which is really neat....it is in the fashion of a pop-up book and the graphics are really amazing.  We have watched that story several times (it also has a "bad guy" which in my house is a must these days!).

The Search For Santa Paws has helped get us in the Christmas spirit and has earned a spot on our Christmas favorites list!  Pick up a copy of this Blu-Ray/DVD combo today....

CSN Stores...

I have been doing tons of shopping online for the holidays.  There is something about sitting in the comfort of my home shopping that makes me so much more merry than fighting the crowds at the mall.  Where have I been doing a bunch of shopping?  CSN Stores!  You may remember I told you about them last month and since I have been introduced to them I have been hooked!  The first person on my list?  Myself.  I know, I know but a girl has to treat herself too, right?  I am on the hunt for a sling backpack and CSN has a huge selection.

I am shopping for a sling backpack as way to organize myself when I leave the house.  I do not want to tell you how often I lose my keys or how many cell phones have had to be replaced.  The good news is I have never misplaced a child!  A friend suggested something that actually hangs off my body to help keep the things I need from disappearing.  I decided to give it a shot and after seeing the cute styles like this I know (hope and pray!!) that I will be compelled to remember to put my essentials in it!  If not, at least I will look good while heading to the lost and found! Families of the World...Review & Giveaway!

There is a wonderful series out for children called Families Of The World and if you have a child aged 5-11 you should most definitely be interested in introducing these important DVD's.

We had the pleasure of reviewing two of the titles here in our home and I was so glad to have seen them.  Here is a taste of what we saw...

In Families of Kenya we meet 11-year-old Prince, a sixth grader who lives in the city of Nairobi with his mother, who owns a preschool; father, a purchasing agent; and older siblings Ian and Shelby.  After waking to the sound of barking dogs from next door, Prince helps with morning chores before heading off to school, where we sit in on a science class.  After school, he rides bikes with a buddy, making sure to clean off all the dust from the road, caused by the area’s years-long drought.  Homework follows dinner, then it’s video games before bed.  During the weekend, Prince helps with the shopping, attends church with his family, and enjoys a local festival featuring tribal dances.  Later he visits relatives at the seaside city of Mombasa.

Eleven-year-old John starts his day on his family’s farm at five a.m., helping his parents and brother, Jeffrey, with household chores like tending to their many animals.  Then it’s an hour-long walk to school where he attends the seventh grade six days a week.  He tells us that education is deemed very important so villages work hard to come up with the money to help the schools.  He has midday dinner with his family, who close their shop at noon along with the rest of the local businesses.  We are also taken on a safari tour run by John’s cousin and shown the wondrous wildlife of Africa, including lions, elephants, zebras and hyenas.  At night, John helps bring in the furniture from outdoors and feeds and waters the cows before heading off to bed.

In Families of Afghanistan, meet Zamora, 13, who lives in the country with her parents, three sisters, two brothers and two uncles.  An early riser, Zamora has chores to complete before breakfast, including tending to the cows and chickens.  She shows us how the homes in her village are built around a common courtyard to help protect them and their vegetable gardens from the elements.  At meals, she often helps feed her uncle, who lost his arms and eyesight to a land mine.  She attends religion class, where she studies the Koran, and performs her daily prayers (five times a day).

Twelve-year-old Madina lives in Kabul with her parents, two sisters, uncle and cousin.  Unlike Zamora, who attends school in the afternoon, Madina’s classes are in the morning and include studies in math, science, language, history and sports.  She also tutors another student twice a week in computers.  After school and the midday meal she shares with her family, Madina helps with household chores like vacuuming and ironing, then enjoys an afternoon snowball fight before doing her homework, eating supper and playing games.

Both Families of Kenya and Families of Afghanistan introduced the boys to a way of life which was completely different to them and for that I am grateful.  You can only explain with words so much...things have more of an impact with visuals sometimes and this is one of those times.  What a wonderful way these DVDs' go about showing different cultures by showing children other children "just like them" and showing the differences in their lives and the things that are the same as well. The videos really help to explain different cultures, instill a better understanding as well as tolerance and I think they are a must for school aged children.  A&W may have been a little young (just turned 4 and the recommended age is 5-11) but I think they still got something out of it and these are definitely DVD's I will show them again.

You can purchase Families of the World DVD's here on Amazon or click here to visit Families of the World directly for more buying options.  Each DVD retails for $29.99.
