A new, family friendly DVD hit the shelves this past week...Breaking the Press. It is an inspiring story with a Christian message appropriate for the whole family. Here is the scoop...
A young man loses his way but through the power of his
family’s prayers finds the path to redemption and rediscovers the love of his
father in BREAKING THE PRESS, going for the gold on
DVD September 20 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.
A recent
recipient of the Dove Foundation’s “Family-Approved” seal for all audiences over
the age of twelve, this inspiring Biblical parable stars Drew Waters (“Friday
Night Lights”) as Joe Conahey, a small-town high school basketball coach whose
Christian faith is tested by an unsuccessful season and the intense pressure
that results. The family’s two star sons—the older, diligently hardworking
brother Matt (Chad Halbrook, Brotherhood) and the younger,
naturally-gifted Josh (Tom Maden, “According to Jim”)—are separated when Josh
selfishly transfers to a powerhouse school hundreds of miles away. His previous
team’s top player, Josh finds difficulty adjusting to the big-city program,
tempted as he is by girls, drugs, alcohol and stardom – and is subsequently
expelled. Only through the power of prayer and forgiveness can the troubled
”Prodigal Son” make his way back into the arms of his loving father and find
redemption for his family and his team.
I thought this movie had a great message and a nice flow. It is a nice, positive movie for the whole family to enjoy. It was, at times, predictable but I do not think it really took away from the story. The message of the importance of family, faith and forgiveness is well played out in the movie. Breaking the Press is family friendly and would make an excellent movie night pick...pop some popcorn, watch the flick and then talk about the message. Perfect! Pick up your copy today on Amazon...

Families of the World: Germamy & Philippines...Review & Giveaway!
I have two new titles to tell you about today in the wonderful, Families of the World series. Germany and the Philippines are featured in the newest installments and they are great additions to your DVD libraries. Here is the scoop....
Families of Philippines
Travel to the tropical Philippines with 13-year-old Khim and 7-year-old Shahani. Khim lives with his grandparents on Cebu, one of the country's 7000 islands. He is a freshman at a school with 10,000 students. Besides school, his day includes taking care of the family's goats, playing arcade games, gathering wood and cooking rice for dinner.
Shahani lives on Luzon with her mother, father and sister. Like Khim, Shahani's school is large...5000 students who each wear a name tag. We follow her to opening ceremonies and English class, buy groceries with her mother, check out the large mall where her father entertains at birthday parties, and watch Shahani and her sister practice in their father's dance class. In the award-winning Families of the World Series, viewers get a peek at the everyday lives of two families - usually an urban and a rural family. We are introduced to a child who helps narrate his or her activities. The footage is fantastic - intimate but not intrusive. Lots of interesting facts about the country are presented from a realistic viewpoint which brings other cultures up close. Free teacher's guide is available to download at familiesoftheworld website.
Families of Germany
Journey to Germany to visit 8-year-old Sophia, who lives with her family in a tiny town near Frankfurt. We see Sophia at school and at her guitar lesson, follow her to a fundraiser for a classmate, meet the chickens and calves she helps tend, attend a concert where her sister sings in a gospel choir, and walk around charming Marburg, setting for many of Grimm's fairy tales.
Ten-year-old Ole enjoys a Boy Scout cookout in a landfill-turned-park, dresses up like Dracula to "trick or treat" with friends in his neighborhood, practices with his handball team and takes care of his tortoises. We sit in on his older brother's drum lesson, follow his mother as she teaches at an animal museum, and go sight seeing with the family in downtown Berlin, where they live.

Big Bully...Review & Giveaway!
Today I want to tell you about a children's CD that I feel very passionately about. Big Bully, A Best Foot Forward CD from Recess Music is a CD that I would like to place in the hands of every child on the planet. I think it is that good and I think it is that important. All you have to do is read the paper or turn on the news and see what an epidemic the problem of bullying is. I actually get sick to my stomach when I think about it. As a mother my heart breaks to think of a child being bullied and I hope my children are never the victims of bullies or bullies themselves. When I heard about Big Bully I was anxious to play it for my children. As the title suggests, Big Bully, is full of songs handling the topic of bullying head on. Here is a bit of background...
Recess Music, a company dedicated to helping kids value a world that is wise, fair, and generous hearted, has launched its “Best Foot Forward” series of CDs with Big Bully, an album featuring songs by such kids music luminaries as Milkshake, The Hipwaders and Renee & Jeremy.
The folks at Recess Music hope that Big Bully will help to encourage discussion among parents, children, and educators about harmony, understanding, social justice, and global peace, as well as the particular challenges caused by the unfortunate presence of intimidation and bullying behavior on our social landscape. Big Bully opens with The Uncle Brothers’ wonderfully alliterative, two-beat country tune, ”Bully Bubba,” explaining why bullies do the things they do and providing solid, practical advice: When you ignore them, they will go away! In up-to-date folk style, Nancy Tucker’s “Most Valuable Player” pays tribute to doing the right thing, declaring, “No matter what the scoreboard said, that kid came out a winner.” The Hipwaders encourage kids to develop a positive attitude to behavioral consequences with their upbeat song “Time In Time Out,” while Mary Kaye’s “Mean Ogre” features a really mean ogre singing about refusing to change. The country/rock “Me Last Attitude” by The Happy Crowd helps foster a gracious attitude that includes thinking of others first. Milkshake’s colorful, rocking “Enemies” portrays best friends who, unfortunately, sometimes act like enemies. “One and Only Me” by Janet’s Planet and “I Can Make a Difference” by J. P. Taylor & The Academics emphasize self-understanding and self-validation. The Hill Brothers have fun with “Vicious Vinnie,” a droll minor key song in praise of “talking it out” with teachers. Susan Salidor’s lovely ukulele waltz “I’m Sorry” offers a variety of ideas for how to apologize. More good advice for kids is given on Lyle Cogen’s rap, “No Put Downs,” and Lou Del Bianco’s “Bad Day Today.” In Leslie Bixler’s lyrical “Can You Imagine?” the focus is on empathy, with children being taken through situations where they “take a walk in someone else’s shoes.” Glenn Colton shares more insights about bullies on “Don’t Bully Me,” singing “Bullies are like babies in disguise.” Renee & Jeremy bring the album to a peaceful close with their mellow “Wishing Well,” a song conveying wishes of peace, love and well-being to all.
This whole entire CD is a masterpiece. My kids LOVE the CD from start to finish. The songs give sound advice. For instance in "Bully Bubba" the line "telling is not tattling. telling will protect you and me" about speaking up for yourself or others. In Vicious Vinnie a boy is portrayed as the victim of bully and will do anything he can to avoid going to school until he tells his teacher who is able to help. When I heard the song "I'm Sorry" I actually wept. The line of "I am sorry I did the thing that I did that made you sad" helps children to understand the power of saying "I'm sorry". I am actually tearing up over the beauty of it now.

Glodose...PTPA Winner! Review & Giveaway!
Summer is gone and you know what that means....cold and flu season is upon us. No matter how much hand sanitizer (or "hanitizer" as my kids all call it!) I douse everyone with, we still get an (un)healthy dose of illnesses. Actually, right now I am trying to power through a head cold that I am hoping I don't spread to the rest of the family (fingers crossed!).
There are a million things I don't like about when the kid are sick...I hate to see them tired/uncomfortable and unhappy being number one of course. Anything that can make caring for a sick child easier scores MAJOR points with me. When I learned about Glodose, I was really anxious to try it because, quite frankly, I thought the concept was genius! Here is the scoop...
Glodose is the first and only light-up medicine dropper that makes administering medicine to children at night safer and easier. Glodose has a built in light and batteries with a simple push on and off button at the top of the dropper. When the button is pushed, the entire dropper illuminates and you are able to see the dosage clearly (even in a dark setting) and are than able to guide the medicine into the child's mouth. Not only does this product eliminate any light disturbance by not having to turn on any lights in the room, but also and more importantly can help reduce the risk of overdosing a child at night.

Fresh Wave....Review & Giveaway!
Something I really love is a fresh smelling house. Living in Maine, once the temperatures start getting chilly (almost the entire year!) the windows stay shut and the air just feels stale. Blech. I don't like the heavy sprays of most products out there...too "fake" smelling and overpowering and with three little ones I have to be VERY careful with candles. When I was approached by Fresh Wave to review I was thrilled. Fresh Wave has an entire line of products whose purpose is to keep your life smelling good. Perfect! Here is a bit of background from the Fresh Wave website...
Tired of heavily perfumed deodorizers that merely mask foul smells? Fresh Wave is the cure for the common, chemical air freshener. Unscented Fresh Wave® was created to eliminate odors…naturally. Fresh Wave Sprays, Crystal Gels, Candles, Vacuum Pearls, Carpet Shake and Pearl Packs all use the power of nature for safe, non-toxic odor elimination without the use of perfumes or fragrances. Simple, natural, ingredients like Lime, Pine Needles, Aniseed Clove, Cedarwood and Water.
They’re great for the home, car, office, cabin, boat, locker, gym bag and every place else. Wherever you have an odor, we have a Fresh Wave solution.

Watch Your Wallet Wednesday...Hello Superpoints!
All year long I work on finding ways to nab inexpensive or free gift cards. I save them all up (making sure they do not expire first of course!!) to use on Christmas presents. This makes December a whole lot less painful when it rolls around. I just recently discovered a super, duper easy way to earn free gift cards....Superpoints. Superpoints is a site that gives you points for doing things like answering surveys, watching videos and by spinning a wheel (you can do this 50 times per day and all are chances to snag points!). This is by far the easiest site I have encountered in which to earn points to trade in for gift cards or other fun prizes. Spin a wheel? Sign me up! I also receive e-mails that have points too...yesterday I got 25 points just for opening an e-mail!
Right now I am saving up for Amazon gift cards to use on holiday shopping. They are in as little as $5 increments so you don't have to save up a ton of points to reap the rewards (love that!). There are lots of places to choose gift cards from like Wal-mart, Best Buy, Jamba Juice and tons more. They even have toys and electronics you can trade your points in for too. Hey, maybe I should save up for an Ipad. Merry Christmas to me!!
If you use one of Reviewed by Mom's invite codes you will be started off with some points at sign up. What will you use your points for?? Be sure to click one of the 10 links below to snag a code before they are all gone. If you have one that is invalid move to the next on on the list so you can grab your points. This is free and easy...enjoy!

Real Moms Love to Eat...Review!
I am like 99.9% of women out there....I think about food more often than I would like to and often it is in a negative way. I hate this about myself. I am always on the hunt for the new, fad that will magically make being thin easy and quick all while I am stuffing chocolate cake in my mouth. Reasonable, right?
As I mentioned, I love the idea of instant gratification with little or no work on my part and I am not often inspired to actually make a life change. Sad but true. I recently have discovered a book that has made this lazy, cake loving mom rethink her ways and it is easy. Seriously. Real Moms Love to Eat has made this Mom a believer and I am not easily won over when it comes to things like this. Here is what has me having my cake AND eating it too (really!!)...
Amazon has the book for just $10.20 which is a 32% discount and it is worth every single penny! Be sure to check out www.realmomslovetoeat.com to enter twice monthly drawings for great prizes as well. I hope you all will check out this book and I hope some of you are as inspired as I have been. Here's to healthier moms! Pin It

Real Moms Love to Eat has made this Mom a believer and I am not easily won over when it comes to things like this. Here is what has me having my cake AND eating it too (really!!)...
Let’s face it, you’re a Real Mom and
like most moms, you love to eat. The problem is most of the time there
is guilt and frustration surrounding our decisions to give in and eat
the foods we enjoy, like weight gain, physical reactions to food and the
could’a, would’a, should’a, syndrome.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with
loving food; it’s the type of food you choose to love that is the
problem. Like a torrid affair, you know it’s not good for you but having
a love affair with your own husband is good for you, in fact, it’s
great! You wouldn’t jeopardize your marriage for a one-night stand, so
why would you do it to your own body with unhealthy food choices. The
devastation is the same!
Real Moms Love to Eat was created with
you in mind. It will lead you on a food journey of excitement, fun and
new surprises, without pigeon-holing you into one eating style or
another. Instead, you are free to experiment, get crazy and become more
open-minded about the food you will soon discover. It’s a love affair
like no other–with huge rewards of looking fabulous.
Real Moms Love to Eat will be your ONE
source for tasty, fresh, whole food meals, creative recipes and food
facts that will keep you looking fabulous and feeling energized and
fulfilled.
With video recipes, TV clips, Real Moms
on the radio, Food Flirt Friday (fun desserts or luscious surprises),
Whine & Dine Wednesday (where we’ll answer your food questions or
solve your kitchen inquiry or simply suggest a good bottle of wine), and
Meal Planning Monday where recipes and nutritional solutions steal the
show, we hope you’ll make Real Moms Love to Eat your regular go-to site
for food, fun, healthy inspiration and a place where you are the star
(we’ll feature your blog, recipe or food tip).
Let the eating begin!
This book speaks to me in a way other "diet" books never have. Actually, I don't want to call this a diet book because it really is not. This is a book about changing your lifestyle so you can have the things you love while still making healthy choices. We moms want to make healthy choices so we can be the best we can be for our kiddos but we also want some fun (cake!) too. Beth Aldrich shows you how to do this with weekly assignments (love this concept!) and fresh, easy to follow ideas. As I was reading this I felt like I was chatting with a good friend. Beth Aldrich IS a real mom so she knows the struggles and she knows how to address them. I have been putting some of Beth's ideas to work and I already feel better...REALLY!
Real Moms Love to Eat is coming out on January 3rd and I would HIGHLY recommend pre-ordering your copy now from Amazon...

Costume Super Center...Review!
Halloween is creeping up on us...are you all ready yet?? If you don't have your costumes yet, head right on over to Costume Super Center. CostumeSuperCenter.com has a staggering variety of costumes for the whole family....even the family pet!! When my son "W" told me he wanted to be a firefighter for Halloween this year I knew right where to go.
The Junior Firefighter Costume I received from Costume Super Center is amazing. The quality is superb and is actually on par to the ones our local museum has on hand for the firefighter exhibit they have! My son is thrilled with his costume and has had it on for dress-up pretty much everyday since it arrived! It is durable and the fabric is heavy which means it will last and keep him warm for trick-or-treating....love that! We really like to use our old costumes for dress-up and often they do not last because of poor quality but I can tell this firefighter will be around for a whole lot of imaginary emergencies!
You can find a full variety of new costumes for boys on Costume Super Center. There are just so many to choose from. I might go back and order some more for our dress up box!
Visit Costume Super Center today to order costumes for the whole family...you will be so glad you did. You can also follow them on Twitter to stay on top of the latest styles and deals. Happy shopping! Pin It

Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated is a favorite here at Reviewed by Mom. Actually, if I had to pick an an all around favorite character, Scooby would be it. A&W love him and so does Little. Even my husband and I like to watch. I guess you could say Scooby has a broad appeal! Yesterday, when Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated Season One Volume 3 showed up at my door for review the kids just about burst with excitement. A&W actually got into a little wrestling match over who got to check out the packaging first! Naturally, we popped it right in to avoid some sort of riot! Here is the scoop on what we just couldn't wait for...

Nachomamatees....Review & Giveaway!
You all already know how much my family lives in t-shirts. When we are hanging around the house or running errands we are generally wearing t's. When the t-shirts are funny, quirky or fun all the better! Nachomamatees has a slew of fun t-shirts for those family casual days. I love t-shirts that can make me laugh and, let me tell you, Nachomama has a whole bunch of them! I am particularly fond of 80's t-shirts and there are no shortage of those on Nachomama either. Check out some of my favorite 80's t-shirts from the Nachomamatees site...
How fun are these?? I am definitely getting my husband the Griswald Family Christmas one for the holidays! Nacomamatees sent this Rusty Bucket t-shirt over to me...

Apples Anyone? Recipe for Mom's Apple Crisp...
Over the weekend the family and I head out to do one of my very favorite fall activities....apple picking! I love, love, love apple picking and for me, it really kicks off the season. I love watching the kids climb trees (I have actually been known to climb a few myself to snatch the perfect apple!) and filling up baskets of deliciously ripe apples. We have already eaten though a double batch of my apple crisp and I am planning on making another today. Since I can't invite you all over for coffee and crisp I figured I would share my recipe with you. I hope you enjoy!

Mom's Apple Crisp
7 Cups Peeled &Sliced Apples 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
1/4 C Water 1/4 tsp Salt
1/2 C Sugar 3/4 C Flour
1/2 C Brown Sugar 1/2 C Butter
1/2 tsp Nutmeg
Pre-heat oven to 350. Put apples in a shallow 2 casserole (I use a 2 quart) dish and add water. Combine sugars, nutmeg, salt, cinnamon and flour. Cut in butter. Use pastry blender or clean hands to combine mixtures until it is crumbly (my kids love to help with this part!). Spoon mixture evenly over apples. Cover with foil and bake for 1/2 an hour. Remove foil and bake for an additional 1/2 hour.
We like our crisp warm from the oven with vanilla ice cream....delicious!

PUR Gum Review & Giveaway!
I am a gum chewer and always have been. Even though I would love to be blowing big bubbles with Hubba Bubba I always grab sugar free gum because I am way wary of the sugar and calorie content (as well as the risk of giant bubbles popping in my hair). Because I am a sugar free gum kind of gal, I am also highly aware of the aspartame content because, well, aspartame is just not good for you. Enter PUR Gum .
PUR Gum kicks aspartame! When I heard their slogan I just KNEW I had to give it a try. Here is the scoop on what I am chewing away on as I type this review...
PÜR Gum is the #1 selling aspartame-free better tasting, long-lasting gum. Now there's a great tasting gum made especially for people who are looking for a healthy alternative to aspartame-free chewing gum.
Most gums on the market are made with the ingredient Aspartame- a man-made synthetic sweetener that's been linked to many diseases. The FDA has listed 92 acknowledged symptoms of aspartame poisoning (we're not making this stuff up).
There's hope everyone! PÜR Gum is sweetened with Xylitol, a naturally-occurring sugar alcohol found in corn cobs and stalks which a healthy alternative to sugar and artificial sweeteners.
Made in Switzerland, PÜR Gum gives YOU the highest standard of chewing gum on the market (because we care just that much!!) Wait, there's more...Infused with antioxidants, PÜR is naturally coloured and flavoured, vegan friendly, free of genetically modified organisms (GMO) and gluten-free.

Happy Talk Like a Pirate Day! Jake and the Never Land Pirates Giveaway!
Ahoy Matey's! Did you all have fun on National Talk Like a Pirate Day! How fun is this holiday?? I don't know about you but A,W and even little R are way into pirates. They are especially fond of the darling show on Disney, Jake and the Never Land Pirates.
In celebration of this super fun holiday the kids, a few friends and I had a pirate party extravaganza! The kids got all decked out in pirate skull caps and beads and hats and eye patches and they were all just so cute!
We had "pirate pizza" and "pirate punch" and "scallywag sweets". The kids went crazy over this pirate feast which was really just pizza, grape juice and an assortment of cakes and cookies with fancy words thrown in front of them!
We even had some pirate fun by decorating our pirate ship (formerly known as the swing set!) and digging for treasure in our garden patch!
To cap off our pirate party we all watched the upcoming release, Jake and the Never Land Pirates: Yo Ho, Mateys Away! I think this part was the crowd favorite. This show is just so much fun and the kids had so much fun watching their favorite characters and, truth be told, so did I! Here is a bit about this fun, upcoming release:
About the DVD Release:
On September 27, The Walt Disney Studios will be releasing Jake and the Never Land Pirates: Yo Ho, Mateys Away!, a DVD packed full with seven episodes from the series and two incredible bonus features including Yo Ho, You Want To Be A Pirate?, where Jake teaches viewers how to talk like a pirate, and Pirate Party With Pirate-oke, a collection of music videos performed by The Never Land Pirate Band that allow viewers to enjoy with or without the sing-along/karaoke-like feature.
Retailing for the suggested price of $19.99 in the U.S. and $24.99 in Canada, the Jake and the Never Land Pirates: Yo Ho, Mateys Away! DVD also comes packaged with a bonus 7-track CD sampler and a pirate eye patch.
About "Jake and the Never Land Pirates" TV Series:
"Jake and the Never Land Pirates" airs daily during Disney Channel's Disney Junior programming block for kids age 2-7. The series stars the voices of Colin Ford (TV’s “Supernatural”) as Jake, Madison Pettis (TV’s “Cory in the House”) as Izzy, Jonathan Morgan Heit ("Bedtime Stories") as Cubby, David Arquette ("Scream 4") as Skully the lookout parrot, Corey Burton (TV’s “Star Wars: The Clone Wars”) as Captain Hook, and Jeff Bennet (TV’s “Johnny Bravo”) as Mr. Smee.
My pirates and I, Captain Mom, highly recommend this fun filled DVD. You will find yourselves singing along with the songs like real pirates (I know we did)! In addition to buying this one you should definitely make a party out of it like we did with fun ideas from the Disney Junior website (found HERE).
Disclosure: I was provided with the above mentioned products for this review and a $25 gift card for party food and supplies. This opinion is my own and may differ from yours. I was not required to give a positive review and my review was not edited by a third party. Pin It
Watch Your Wallet Wednesday....The Rule of Half
You may have noticed that on some of my recent giveaways I have been asking you all what YOU want to see and I am so glad so many of you gave some feedback there. I want Reviewed By Mom to be a site you like to visit and that you come back to regularly. So, one of the suggestions that came up often was more money saving tips. I am learning everyday new ways to cut corners and save. I am a stay at home mom and every penny counts. Each Wednesday you will now see "Watch Your Wallet Wednesday" which will feature a money saving idea or frugal tip that I am putting in to action. Lots of the things I do are small but when you add them all up they make a difference. I hope you enjoy this new feature and please feel free to add your own tips in the comments section. I love new ideas and might even feature your idea next time. Here goes...
The Rule of Half. I use half of everything I can. Half of a dryer sheet, paper towel, brillo pad ,half of the recommended amount of shampoo and laundry detergent. Companies want us to use more so we will buy more. Not this mom! If I can make it last twice as long I certainly will. As long as I get what I need out of a product using half (clean hair, clean clothes, clean dishes etc...) I will use the smaller amount. I am not suggesting you be a hero...by all means use it if you really NEED it but I think if you try it, you will find you need less than you think. Try it out and then let me know what you have halved today!

Ted Jacobs: Back to the Garden...Review & Giveaway!
There is delightfully peaceful CD coming out today that I am so excited to tell you about. Ted Jacobs: Back to the Garden will soothe you and your child away from the craziness of a long day. Here is a little background about Ted Jacobs as well as some information about this latest release...
Musician/composer Ted Jacobs is dedicated to presenting exquisite acoustic musical settings of the world’s most beloved poetry, and it is with tremendous pride that he announces the September 20 release of his third studio CD, Back to the Garden, a collection of songs based on poems from Robert Louis Stevenson’s A Child’s Garden of Verses. More than ten years in the making, this album is a companion to Jacobs’ award-winning recording, A Child’s Garden of Songs.
Throughout his highly celebrated life, Robert Louis Stevenson possessed the unique gift of being able to maintain extraordinarily close contact with the spirit of his own childhood, the result of which was his beloved collection of poetry, A Child’s Garden of Verses. Amid the hustle and bustle of today’s world, children are often deprived of time to dream, and, at the same time, there isn’t much stimulus for reflective thinking to be found in the majority of contemporary children’s music. Back to the Garden affords a perfect antidote to urgent schedules and electronic fascination, providing time and space for children to reflect, dream, and imagine while they nurture their creativity with music that’s an ideal match for Stevenson’s poems. All the singers and players who came together to create Ted Jacobs’ A Child’s Garden of Songs reunited to decorate Back to the Garden with the sounds of uillean pipes, fiddle, penny whistles, mandolin, dulcimer, accordion, and other acoustic instruments. Celtic players of olden times would feel right at home with Jacobs’ original compositions, which also sparkle with contemporary relevance. The resulting collaboration has such a way of lighting up the meaning of the poems that children find themselves memorizing without even realizing they are doing so. The poems are sung exactly as the poet wrote them. Nothing is repeated, nothing is deleted and the singing, both ensemble and solo, rings with artistic integrity and beauty.

Never the Hope Itself: Love and Ghosts in Latin America and Haiti...Review & Giveaway!
You all know how much I love a good read. I just finished up something wonderful....Never the Hope Itself: Love and Ghosts in Latin America and Haiti is a book that touched me and that will stay with me for a long time. Here is the scoop...
A former NPR correspondent takes you into his own ghost-filled life as he reports on a region in turmoil. Gerry Hadden was training to become a Buddhist monk when opportunity came knocking: the offer of a dream job as NPR’s correspondent for Latin America. Arriving in Mexico in 2000 during the nation’s first democratic transition of power, he witnesses both hope and uncertainty. But after 9/11, he finds himself documenting overlooked yet extraordinary events in a forgotten political landscape. As he reports on Colombia’s drug wars, Guatemala’s deleterious emigration, and Haiti’s bloody rebellion, Hadden must also make a home for himself in Mexico City, coming to terms with its ghosts and chasing down the love of his life, in a riveting narrative that reveals the human heart at the center of international affairs.

The Giant Book of Giants by Saviour Pirotta...Review & Giveaway!
I have just shared the most GIANT hit of a book with A&W. The Giant Book of Giants by Saviour Pirotta is an absolute hit at our house for scary (but not too terribly scary!) fun and excitement. Here is the scoop...
With an incredible, huge, interactive poster and six adventurous stories, The Giant Book of Giants is larger than life!
The pop-up, pull-out poster in this BIG tome measures over four feet tall--and offers plenty of playful extras, including flaps to lift and removable items such as a clock tower pocket watch, pipe organ harmonica, and even the giant's ear wax! The action-packed tales in the book include “Jack and the Beanstalk,” “Sinbad's Third Voyage,” and “Coyote Tricks the Giant.” Monster fun for any child--tall or small!
This book is the ultimate in interesting for A&W. The Giant Book of Giants is filled with great stories. We have read through all six and the boys enjoyed them all and ask to hear them regularly. The only one of the six included stories we had read before was "Jack and the Beanstalk" so the others were all new to us and the boys really enjoyed each (the other stories not mentioned above are "Momotaro, The Peach Boy", "The Curious Giantess" and "Finn and Buggane"). Each of the stories are 5-10 minute reads each which have made them perfect "snack time" stories for us. My guys like scary things but these would be a little much for them right before bed. For an older child they would be super bedtime stories! The illustrations are very well done and depict each giant from the story in an original fashion which my boys liked a great deal. They love those scary giants!

Baby Safety Month....HALO Sleep Sack Giveaway!
September is Baby Safety Month. I know we all do our very best to keep our little ones safe and I always try and keep up with current studies so I can be sure I am doing what is best. Something I know is useful in preventing SIDS is swaddling. Now, I am just NOT one of those people who can wrap a baby up all burrito like. Thank goodness for me that HALO has a wonderful product out there...the HALO SleepSack Swaddle. This was instrumental in me getting Baby R all cozied up for sleep in those early days. Not only did she sleep better being swaddled but I did not have to worry about her suffocating on loose blankets which allowed me to rest a lot easier. When I am asked about must haves for new moms the HALO SleepSack ALWAYS makes it to the top of my list!
I also want to mention something about the traditional receiving blanket way of swaddling (you know...the burrito!). When you swaddle the baby with legs straight, they can suffer from hip dyspalasia. Here is more information...

Peter Pauper Press: Mom's Weekly Calendar...Review & Giveaway!
I am kind of (a lot) absent minded. I have never been one to be particularly organized and it is something that really drives me crazy about myself. Our family is busy and keeping everyone's schedule takes more organization than my usual reminders jotted down on napkins. When A&W started school this year I vowed to become more organized and I started the year equipped with the Mom's Weekly Calendar from Peter Pauper Press. In case you are unfamiliar, Peter Pauper Press features a selection of stationary, journals, books and gifts that make my heart go aflutter. I am a gal who gets excited over this sort of thing!
When Peter Pauper Press sent me the Mom's Weekly Calendar I was thrilled. First off the quality is outstanding. The hardcover is sturdy and their is an elastic to keep the book closed when not in use. I chose the red color which just looks so sharp. When I opened it up I got even more excited. This calendar/planner is the perfect blend for me...simplicity meets organization. Love it! It runs for 18 months and each month is separated by a tab allowing you to flip through quickly. There is a two page spread for each week's "master plan" and has a column for each family member. This has been so helpful to me over the past two weeks I have been using it. My husband travels quite a bit for work and I am always at a loss about when he will be home and now I just write it in his column when he mentions it. Each of the kids also have their own column which makes school days and play date planning a breeze. Baby R does not have much in her column yet but it if she suddenly becomes a mini social butterfly I am ready for it.
Beyond the spread for the master plan, are address pages, tear out "to-do" lists and monthly at a glance calendars. Peppered throughout the book are funny and touching quotes about families. The Mom's Weekly Calendar is helping me to stay on track and organized which is quite a feat! Not only does the book look nice in my bag it is user friendly so it is easy to keep using. This might be the year this Mom never forgets a dentist appointment or play date!
