I have had the pleasure of sharing two DVD's featuring episodes from an absolutely darling with A,W and Little R. We have been delighting in the show Peep and the Big Wide World thanks to two new DVD's from PBS, Bringing Spring and Finders Keepers. This show is just fantastic! It is funny, charming and full of science lessons for little ones. Here is the scoop on the 2 DVD's we just can't get enough of here at Reviewed by Mom.
Finders Keepers...
Set in and around a pond, a bush, and a tin can, follow a newly hatched chicken
named Peep, and his friends Chirp and Quack (a robin and a duck), on their daily
adventures. They live in a place of great wonder and mystery, a place they are
forever eager to explore, a place they call "the big wide world." Celebrate
being curious, being adventurous, and, for at least one character, being a duck.
Finders, Keepers - Quack finds a PERFECT slice of bread. Should
he listen to his duck wisdom, which is telling him to save it for a rainy day?
Quack Quiets the Universe - Another sleepless night for Quack.
Why can't everyone be QUIET and let a poor duck get some rest--!
Chirp Sorts It Out (sort of) - Chirp's interest in collecting
soon becomes a full-fledged mania. Time to stage an intervention!
Hear Here - Quack decides to give a concert--"An Afternoon With
Quack"--but has trouble finding the proper venue.
The Lurmies are
Coming - Quack alerts Peep and Chirp that they must build an elevated path
to escape the dreaded lurking Lurmies.
Quack's Square Deal -Chirp
is collecting things that are square, so Quack starts a collection of things
with "pointy-tops." (Oddly, if you turn them a bit, they look just like Chirp's
squares!)
Count Them Out - Okay, so you have a large collection,
but no way of knowing how large, exactly. What's a collecting fiend (like Chirp)
to do?
Peep Prints - The birds discover you can make prints with
berry juice. (Quack discovers that duck prints make EVERYTHING look good.)
Bringing Spring...
Bringing Spring - It's February, which means it's cold and blah and
dreary. But things start to cheer up when the birds help a young groundhog find
her shadow.
Quack's Pond Party - Quack needs some attention
(shocking!), and decides to throw a party to get some. He'll be the
entertainment, of course, but what should he serve to eat?
Stick With
Me - Peep goes in search of his favorite (lost) dandelion seed, and
discovers that the world is full of sticky things.
Tree Feller -
Exciting news! Beaver Boy is ready to cut down his first tree! Come one, come
all! Don't forget your hard hats!
An Inconvenient Tooth, Part 1 -
Beaver Boy needs some wood to gnaw. (He's got growing teeth!) Problem is, he's
cutting down too many trees. The solution? Grow some new trees!
An
Inconvenient Tooth, Part 2 - Beaver Boy discovers that growing trees is
hard. (Not to mention slowwwwww.) Can he find some other way to make his teeth
happy?
You Can Count on Bunnies - Five (or maybe it's 30) young
bunnies have gotten lost. Can Peep and Quack help them find their bunnysitter?
Falling Feathers - Quack's losing his feathers, but just how many
(is too many)?
This show is just a hoot! First of all, I love the time amount of each episode at just over 10 minutes. This bit of time is often just enough for me to fold laundry or get dinner going (or maybe even watch along!). All of the episodes were a big hit in our home with plenty of laughs served up with important science lessons. For instance, in Bringing Spring the birds help teach about shadows and Groundhog Day and in An Inconvenient Tooth children are introduced to the importance of conservation.
I am the first to admit that I find science to be a bit, ahem, dry but then again when I was growing up there were no funny feathered friends to help pave the way for a more enjoyable scientific experience. My children think this show is so much fun and I love that it is teaching them important lessons. Way to go PBS...we are big fans of Peep and the Big Wide World! I am so pleased to tell you that PBS is giving FOUR lucky RBM readers a copy of both Finders, Keepers and Bringing Spring! Thanks so much to PBS for their generosity and here is how to enter...
