My Maine....Review & Give Away!
My Maine is adorable. The little girl (and her adorable stuffed moose!) answer the question of "How Maine is Special to You" at show and tell by taking us along for a picturesque tour of my home state. Hersey describes many of the places that make Maine special from Moosehead Lake to LL Bean to Bar Harbor as well as some of the things that make Maine unique like whoopie pies, lobster and beautiful rocky coasts. We are Portlanders so we were especially excited to see The Children's Museum (where we visit several times per month) and the boat The Lucky Catch which resides in Portland Harbor. The illustrations are lovely (done by Nicole Fazio in water color)and capture the beauty and likeness of the state. My children love this book and so do I! Whether you are a Mainer or you are "from away" you should absolutely have this delightful book for your bookshelf. Pick up your copy today...

The Girl Below by Bianca Zander...Review & Give Away!
After ten years in New Zealand, Suki returns to London, to a city that won't let her in. However, a chance visit with Peggy—an old family friend who still lives in the building where she grew up—convinces Suki that there is a way to reconnect with the life she left behind a decade earlier. But the more involved she becomes with Peggy's dysfunctional family, including Peggy's wayward sixteen-year-old grandson, the more Suki finds herself mysteriously slipping back in time—to the night of a party her parents threw in their garden more than twenty years ago, when something happened in an old, long-unused air-raid shelter. . . .
A breathtaking whirlwind of mystery, transgression, and self-discovery, Bianca Zander's The Girl Below is a haunting tale of secrets, human frailty, and dark memory that heralds the arrival of an extraordinary new literary talent.
This novel was haunting. Suki Piper is a many layered character who is, at times, a bit hard to like. She seems aimless and unambitious but ultimately that is what keeps you reading. The question is WHY is Suki Piper who she is. The story bounces back between present day and Suki's childhood throughout the book. I really enjoyed how Bianca Zander presented the story in this way because not only do I think it added further depth to Suki's tale but I think it kept me wanting to no more without offering up her history all in one full swoop. Zander has a gift with words that made this mystery/coming of age tale one I was reluctant to put down. I can't wait for her next work! Pick up this read today and let me know what you think.... They set off on a journey to find the Wizard of Song (Jason Mraz) so he can help Marina get back home. In addition, preschoolers can enjoy two bonus episodes from the hit live-action series.
Fresh Beat Band: The Wizard of Song Episode Synopses:
The Wizard of Song
When Marina gets swept up into a windstorm, she lands in Oz where she meets Glinda the Good Witch (Sarah Chalke). Along the way, she befriends a Scarecrow (Twist), a Tin Woods-Woman (Kiki), and a Lion (Shout) and they go to the Wizard of Song (Jason Mraz) so that Marina can find her way home.
Ghost Band
The Fresh Beats run into a ghost band when they get a gig in a western town. They face-off against the ghosts in a musical showdown and discover that the ghosts are misunderstood. So they work together to bring people back to the town.
Chimps in Charge
The Fresh Beats help their friend Harper babysit a pair of chimps who are a lot to handle. Marina gets the idea to build a jungle gym for the chimps in the park and the Fresh Beats find a perfect song to rock their show.
My children have been Fresh Beat Fans for a while now. The catchy songs, dancing and fun adventures have had them hooked. We are also fans of The Wizard of Oz so, as you can imagine, this DVD has been wildly popular in our home. The Fresh Beats put their own "fresh" spin on this old favorite. The songs were fun and my kids liked the familiar characters from the Wizard of Oz taken on by Fresh Beats. They really liked the juniorkins! The whole episode was colorful and exciting for them. This was a huge hit! The other two episodes were well loved as well especially "Ghost Band" by A&W because they are into all things even remotely spooky these days. The Wizard of Song is a must have for any Fresh Beat Band fan....family fun for all! Pick up your copy today....

The Burning House by Foster Huntington....Review & Give Away!
The practical? Your laptop, your smartphone, what you need to keep working and stay in touch?
The valuable? Your money, your jewelry, the limited edition signed poster in the living room?
The sentimental? The watch your late grandfather gave you, the diary you kept as a teenager?
What you choose to bring with you speaks volumes about who you are and what you believe in—your interests, your background, your view of life.
With contributions from all over the world, The Burning House is an eye-opening pictorial meditation on materialism; an in-depth, intensely personal interview contained in a single question; a revealing window into the human heart.
This book with full color pictures is absolutely fascinating. You get a look on what is important to a person. You get a glimpse of who they are, what moves them and that window into the soul of another is priceless. It is an excellent study in the human mind that is for sure.
The photos with listings of items varies so much from person to person. From pictures, to letters, to things seemingly frivolous (but ARE they??) you can learn so much about a person. Check out this one as an example....

Elizabeth Mitchell: Little Seed....Review & Give Away!
Are you looking for a great new listen for your commute? I have a wonderful, soothing, folksy pick for you today....Elizabeth Mitchell's Little Seed is a joy for the ears of both you and your children. Here is the scoop...
Elizabeth Mitchell's Little Seed: Songs for Children by Woody Guthrie, featuring re-imagined renditions of 13 kid-friendly Guthrie classics, is now available to purchase in CD or digital download format.
The only CD of Guthrie’s children’s songs coinciding with the Woody Guthrie Centennial, Little Seed pays tribute to the legendary songwriter's uncanny ability to inhabit both the perspective of a loving, protective parent and the voice of a freewheeling child. The album includes thoughtful versions of children’s songs “Riding in My Car,” “Grassy Grass Grass,” and “Bling Blang.” Mitchell also shares her version of “This Land Is Your Land,” Guthrie’s signature song that many people consider a second national anthem.
As always, she is joined on the recording by family (husband Daniel Littleton and daughter Storey) and friends, including Amy Helm, daughter of the late Levon Helm, pillars of the American acoustic music scene Jay Ungar and Molly Mason, and Ruthy Ungar of Mike and Ruthy and formerly of the Mammals.
"Woody Guthrie’s songs for children are a gift to all of us. They are a part of me, part of my family," says Mitchell. "Thank you, Woody, for giving us this beautiful experience and so many others like it. We can feel this profound musical joy anytime, anywhere, with you in our spirits and your songs in our hearts."
Little Seed is her third Smithsonian Folkways album, following You Are My Little Bird (2006) and Sunny Day (2010), and features eight newly recorded tracks and five previously issued favorites.
Woodie Guthrie's children's songs are pure treasures and Elizabeth Mitchell's beautiful, pure voice is the perfect messenger for his powerful words. The songs are delightful and are not only for children. This is a CD the whole family will enjoy. Who doesn't love the song This Land is Your Land?? That is one I loved from when I was a child and now my kiddos are big fans too. Fans of Woodie Guthrie, young and old, should have Little Seed in their collection! Pick up your copy today....

Back to School with FlashKids! Review & Give Away!
My twins start kindergarten in just a few weeks. I simply can't believe I am nearly a mom to school aged children. The years go by so quickly. Expect me to be a puddle of emotions on that first day! One thing I am confident about as far as school goes, is that A&W are ready. Really ready. They love to learn, are curious about the world and are like little sponges for information. In preparation for kindergarten we have been using some wonderful tools from FlashKids. Have you heard about Flashkids? They have flash cards and workbooks created by educators and parents FOR educators and parents. They cover every aspect of your child's education with fun and engaging pictures and clear, easy to follow directions. FlashKids covers takes your child from learning colors to complicated long division with ease!
Because we are entering kindergarten in the fall, we were lucky enough to review three items from the FlashKids collection focusing on kindergarten learning. The first Sight Worlds Flash Cards have become a game in our home....
This book is HUGE and covers a lot of ground. I love that, while the focus is obviously on learning, the creators have taken care to ensure that the road to learning is paved with fun. Word finds and linking letter exercises are a favorite of the boys and they really enjoy this book. The illustrations are also vivid and engaging further adding to the appeal.
Lastly, the boys and I were able to review Alphabet Puzzles and Games. This 60+ page workbook is super. It is filled with great learning worksheets that are fun with easy to follow directions. There are pages which ask your child to follow a specific letter on a path, color specific letters to create a picture, circle items which begin with a certain letter and so much more. At the end of the book there are fun stickers and a certificate of completion. This book was a huge hit with both A&W.
I think learning should be a fun adventure for children and I think Flashkids has done an excellent job combining important skills with fun and engaging games. I know we all want the children in our lives to be successful and happy in their school lives and FlashKids has created tools to help us guide our children on their path. I am a huge fan of FlashKids and will certainly be adding on to our own FlashKids collection as the years progress. To view the entire FlashKids product list for all skill and grade levels click HERE. You will also find free, downloadable worksheets as well so be sure to check out www.flashkids.com.
I am so excited to tell you that the publisher is giving one lucky RBM reader a FlashKids workbook of their choice! Thanks so much to the sponsor and here is how to enter....

What the Nanny Saw by Fiona Neill....Review & Give Away!
their Central London house is besieged by the press, Nick disappears, and Bryony and the children become virtual prisoners in their own home. And Ali, their trusted nanny, watches it all. As the babysitter, she brings a unique insider-outsider perspective to the family, seeing far more than even the family itself is capable of. But when a reporter with a personal connection to the story comes asking her for the inside scoop, will Ali remain loyal to the family who never saw her as anything other than the help? Or will she tell her side?
Written with Fiona Neill’s delicious humor and addictive style, What the Nanny Saw is a keenly observed, often comical chronicle of the urban wealthy elite, of parents who are often too busy to notice what is going on under their own noses, of children left to their own devices, and of a young nanny thrown into a role she doesn’t know how to play. It is a morality tale of our time, a tale of betrayal, the corrosive influence of too much money, and why good people sometimes do bad things.
This was my first time reading Fiona Neill and I can easily add her to my favorite author list. In What the Nanny Saw, she has created a riveting tale with well developed characters. From the first page, I was invested in Ali and I had to know how the big scandal played out. The Skinner family is the ultimate in high society dysfunction and the intrigue about their scandals, affairs and lies kept me reading. Ali is an integral part of their family yet not really family and she is deeply enmeshed in their lives....but does she know what really happened?? Trust me....you want to know more! This book is the perfect way to cap off your summer reading list. Pick up your copy today....

And Laughter Fell From the Sky by Jyotsna Sreenivasan...Review & Give Away!
Still living at home despite a good career and financial independence, beautiful and sophisticated Rasika has always been the dutiful daughter. With her twenty-sixth birthday fast approaching, she agrees to an arranged marriage, all while trying to hide from her family her occasional dalliances with other men.
Abhay is everything an Indian-American son shouldn't be. Having spent his postcollege years living in a commune, he now hops from one dead-end job to another, brooding over what he really wants to do with his life.
Old family friends, Rasika and Abhay seem to have nothing in common, yet when the two reconnect by chance, sparks immediately fly. Abhay loves Rasika, but he knows her family would never approve. Rasika reluctantly accepts she has feelings for Abhay, but can she turn her back on the family rules she has always tried so hard to live by? The search to find answers takes Abhay and Rasika out of their native Ohio to Oregon and India, where they find that what they have together might just be something worth fighting for.
I really enjoyed this book. I found the story line compelling and rich with culture. Raskika definitely did some questionable things (like pretty much leading a double life!) but when faced by the overwhelming demands of her culture and lifestyle I am not sure what I would have done either. This was a great book filled with love, family and relationships. And Laughter Fell From the Sky should not be missed....a great read! Pick up your copy today on Amazon....

Keranique 8 Day Intensive Scalp Treatment...Review!
Boot Camp for Your Scalp
Every now and again I like to share so I passed this along to my mother in law and guest reviewer, The Queen Bee (follow here HERE). Here is what she had to say...
| My
mom used to complain about trying to get a brush through my thick hair. Now,
many years later, I wonder if I was just dreaming that. Over the last few years
my hair has steadily lost volume and my once thick hair is now thin & fine,
with no body.
I had heard about Keranique through my daughter-in-law, so I read up on the
products. I decided to try the Intensive Scalp Treatment. The kit consists of 8
small vials, for 8 days of treatment. Keranique calls it a kick start. After
towel drying your hair, just section it off and massage the treatment into each
section. Dry & style as usual.
The product is loaded with peptides and amino complex which strengthen your
hair at the root, thickening each shaft. It helps to stimulate and nourish the
hair follicle, so that hair is healthier. After using the 8 day treatment, I can
say my scalp feels great, my hair feels healthier. It is fuller & bouncier.
I look forward to trying the other products in the Keranique
line.
Keranique is once again a hit here at Reviewed by Mom! Be sure to visit ww.keranique.com to purchase the entire line.
*Disclosure: I was provided with the above mentioned product for purpose of review. All views express are 100% my own.
